Birmingham Women’s and Children’s NHS Trust – Oral Health for Children with Congenital Heart Disease

The Brief

Birmingham Women’s and Children’s NHS Trust consulted their paediatric patients, and their parents, on how they would like to receive key preventative information. The answer was through short, easy to understand animated videos, and so they reached out to us to put this into practice.

The brief for the first animation we created, shown here, was to reach young patients with congenital heart disease, and importantly their parents too, with information on oral healthcare that is central to preventing a dangerous infection called infective endocarditis.

The Approach

We worked with clinicians at Birmingham, as well as the British Society of Paediatric Dentistry, to develop a clear, simple script that explains what infective endocarditis is, and the essential oral healthcare needed to prevent it. 

The easy to understand script is coupled with animated motion graphics that are cute, appealing and fun – suitable for our target patient age of under 10s, as well as for their parents – and avoiding being serious or scary in any way.

Key text supports the messaging throughout, together with subtitles.

To enhance accessibility across the patient and parent demographic, we created a version with British sign language, and also subtitles in the Trust’s most spoken first languages: Arabic, Punjabi and Romanian.
