The Leprosy Mission
Brief
We were commissioned by The Leprosy Mission to create a short animation to highlight the discriminations and challenges that those affected by leprosy have faced during the Covid-19 pandemic. In line with the ‘Don’t Forget Leprosy’ campaign, the aim was to bring attention to those that have been disproportionately affected by the pandemic.
Approach
Creating a personal voice was at the heart of this project. Our first task was to get the characterisation right. We created mood boards to find the right style for our characters, working with the client to create realistic artwork that reflected the broad, global audience we wanted to reach.
A core aim of The Leprosy Mission is to destigmatise the disease. It was therefore important that when we designed the three characters, we didn’t shy away from the physical effects of leprosy, but never played into harmful stereotypes.

With the animations aimed at a social media audience, we chose to use on-screen text and graphics to ensure that the story was instantly engaging to all, across all platforms. We created a narrative that allows the individual stories to shine through. Highlighting a range of issues caused by the pandemic, such as being unable to access medical treatment or work or find out life-saving information.
Result
The result was a simple, but powerful animation that clearly brings attention to those with leprosy who have disproportionately suffered due to the Covid-19 pandemic. The animation received a fantastic response on social media, culminating in over sixty-four thousand views, becoming one of The Leprosy Mission’s most-watched pieces of content on Facebook.
