Christmas 2024 – Our pick of the best animated ads

The holiday season is here, and with it comes the much-anticipated flurry of Christmas advertisements. They’re arrival has become something of a cultural event, setting the tone for the season and sparking conversations around dinner tables, on social media, and beyond.

From heartfelt family moments to quirky humour, every ad tells its own version of Christmas. Some lean into nostalgia and warmth, tugging at our heartstrings, while others embrace playfulness to stand out. They’re not just selling products; they’re inviting us into stories that make us feel part of the holiday magic.

As we tune in to watch what the big brands have to offer this year, it’s hard not to marvel at the creativity of these campaigns.

Here’s how this year’s standout animated videos are shaping the festive narrative:

Barbour – Shaun the Sheep’s Cozy Christmas

One of this year’s standout Christmas campaigns comes from Barbour, as they once again feature the much-loved Shaun the Sheep in a heartwarming animated adventure. Created by Aardman using stop-motion animation, the ad is set on Mossy Bottom Farm, where the sheepdog Bitzer leads the flock in a frosty carol performance. Their chilly voices are frozen mid-song until Bitzer saves the day by dressing them in Barbour’s snug hats and scarves. Titled “Giving the Gift of Warmth,” the ad highlights Barbour’s cozy holiday offerings while charming audiences with Shaun’s timeless antics

Tim Burton’s Darkly Festive Vision for Harvey Nichols

Harvey Nichols’ latest campaign sees the brand collaborate with the iconic filmmaker to launch an eerie yet charming 3D animation set in a world of whimsical decay. Through rusted metals, soft lighting, and Burtonesque characters, the ad combines mystery and warmth – a distinctly unconventional Christmas tale.

The animation was created in partnership with The Berry production studio and directed by The Berry Boys as part of a collaboration with Tim Burton Productions.

Kevin the Carrot: Aldi’s Action-Packed Hero

Aldi’s beloved animated mascot, Kevin the Carrot, returns for his ninth year, bringing James Bond-level drama to Christmas. This year’s adventure sees Kevin facing the dastardly Dr. Humbug in a race to restore Christmas cheer. Packed with clever visual gags and fast-paced action, this campaign proves that animation is perfect for blending comedy, suspense, and festive charm.

Aldi and McCann Manchester have once again collaborated with Psyop to create this year’s animation.

Sainsbury’s Nostalgic Nod with The BFG

Sainsbury’s taps into childhood nostalgia by featuring Roald Dahl’s BFG in their animated Christmas ad. The beautifully crafted animation breathes life into the giant, capturing the wonder and imagination of the classic story while layering it with festive cheer. This campaign shows how animation can evoke timeless magic while aligning with the brand’s family-friendly ethos.

The animation for this nostalgic ad was created by Sainsbury’s advertising agency New Commercial Arts, in collaboration with The Roald Dahl Company.

Moonpig and Starbucks Join the Festive Fray

Other campaigns embracing shorter storytelling formats this year include Moonpig’s “Moonpig Strut” and Starbucks’ “Drink in, Breathe out”.

Moonpig’s festive spot, brought to life by Modern Citizens and animated by Glassworks, features their signature mascot sashaying confidently in holiday gear. The vibrant animation and joyful energy highlight Moonpig’s commitment to personalisation and spreading seasonal cheer.

Starbucks teamed up with Blinkink for a contemplative holiday ad. This serene animation, with its soothing visuals and heartfelt message, invites viewers to slow down and savour moments of calm amidst the seasonal hustle.

Both campaigns deliver their messages succinctly, proving that brief animations can still leave a lasting impression.

From quirky mascots to heartfelt characters, we hope you agree that this year’s selection of festive animations are a joy to watch.
